How hackers manipulate accounts on Facebook

There are number of ways hackers manipulates Facebook accounts. This could be a direct attack or an indirect manipulation. It doesn’t matter which way they come but what concerns us most is how to handle them whenever we see them coming.

Someone can manipulate someone else account either through direct attack, social engineering, phishing links or fake Facebook apps that steal your data.

A direct attack is when someone makes an attempt to hack someone else account either by using the information they received so far being your friend on Facebook or using a combination of details.

An indirect approach could be through social engineering, phishing links or fake apps that steal data. Social engineering is a smart trick scammers use to manipulate a user into giving providing sensitive information to them.

Social engineers exploit one’s weakness to offering them access to sensitive information. They can come as a corporate body or Facebook pages. They now use these information to ripe off their victims.

On the other hand, phishing links and fake apps are more dangerous than any other account manipulation practice. They appear to be doing what they are not. A phished link is a link that redirect someone to a cloned version of the actual website.

On Facebook, lots of people share links either on their timeline, tagging their friends to a link, sending links on Messenger. The worst thing about phished links is especially when it involves logging into your Facebook using a Facebook login plugin. When these details are submitted to them, they mess with your account. This is exactly what happens to fake apps that steal data.

Identifying Fake friend requests

Most fake friend requests are autogenerated. Scammers create fake accounts or by hacking into existing Facebook accounts or Pages you’ve liked. If you get a friend request from an existing “friend,” verify that the request is genuine before accepting it.

Here are key things to know about auto generated fake accounts;

1. It has at most 2 photos which include 1 profile photo and 1 upload.
2. The profile photo always looks good to be true usually that of a model, soldier, business person or even half naked woman. Men have quick arousing appeal to great looks.
3. The Facebook account is usually less than 24hours old with almost no contents.
4. Even when there is a content, it should redirect to an external link either to see a nude video or “watch me on live cam” video.
5. You have no mutual friends.

You should be careful when accepting friend request without minding how hot the profile picture is.

Facebook hoaxes

Facebook hoaxes are fake news you receive about what Facebook is up to. Most of these hoaxes are hacking attempts – to avoid accepting friend request from so so name to avoid getting hacked.

Stuff like that doesn’t make sense. You should ignore them.

Fake celebrity giveaway.

These give aways are cheap ways Page owners use to get more people to like and follow their page. The criteria for winning a gift is liking and sharing the page. This way a lot of people get to see the page and eventually repeat the process.

At the end of the day, you may be shown fake redeemed profiles and some screenshots if available. If a celebrity page is not verified, chances is that it is either a fake wannabe celebrity page or just a mere fan page trying to get a little attention.
